STARTING this month, the Shenzhen Art Film Screening project has included three more cinemas in Luohu, Futian and Bao’an respectively, in addition to the original Broadway Cinematheque in Nanshan. This expansion enables more locals to watch excellent movies at inexpensive prices. Hosted by the Publicity Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC, the monthly project invites movie enthusiasts to appreciate art films by charging only 20 yuan (US$2.7) for designated screenings and to exchange ideas with outstanding young filmmakers at some of the events. This month, Zhang Yimou’s “Under the Light,” which topped the domestic holiday box-office revenue, is a popular suspense and crime drama exploring the topic of anti-corruption. Other newly opened movies selected for this month include “Hello! Tapir” and “The Song of Spring.” One of the highlights in this month is that several well-acclaimed movies made in recent years have been selected for this month’s screenings. Arthouse movie lovers should not miss “Kaili Blues” (2015), and those who are fascinated with classic Chinese folk romance can watch “White Snake” (2019). “Kaili Blues” is Guizhou director Bi Gan’s aesthetically remarkable debut. It centers on a doctor traveling to his hometown to rescue his nephew, while in the process confronting his traumatic past. Seamlessly segueing between reality and memory, Bi has created an arresting movie that draws the audience into a dreamlike viewing experience with its own melancholy allure. “White Snake” is a Cantonese opera movie centering on an ancient snake spirit transforming into a beautiful woman and falling in love with a man. The highly acclaimed film combines the classical beauty of traditional Cantonese opera with stunning special effects and 4K ultra-high definition, innovatively expressing the art and culture of the old opera in modern film language. Other movies selected for this month include “Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue” (2020), “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains” (2019) and “A First Farewell” (2018), giving the audience a rare chance to review these excellent arthouse films on the big screen.
